Colorado Caucus

By Jen Parsons

I learned, a few weeks ago at a Caucus for Obama event at CU, that in Colorado we DO NOT have a primary. If you want to have any say on which candidates are going to get the party nominations you have to register for that party (not be independent) by DECEMBER 5TH. And then on February 5th you go to your precinct and actually stand to be counted for that candidate. Delegates are assigned to each candidate by the numbers of people that show up for that candidate. This is also how it is done in Iowa and New Hampshire and I, like many people, had no idea we did it this way in Colorado.

Our primary has never mattered much before, but they moved the date up this year. They expect a better turnout this year for the caucus, because of the contentiousness of our politics this year. Last time they said Boulder had a few precincts that had 30 people show up which is really good...WHAT? 30 people deciding who gets nominated GOOD?

PLEASE get active.

It matters MORE that you participate in your caucuses than anything else you can do for your favorite candidate. And it is a good example to your kids and a good example to our government that we ARE interested in what they do.

So go stand up for what you believe in. I don't want to hear anyone next November saying "Oh the choices are between bad and worse" you can help decide what those choices are!
